Deepika Padukone Biography


Deepika Padukone, born on 5 January 1986 in Copenhagen, Denmark to parents Prakash Padukone, a former badminton player of international repute and his wife, a travel agent moved to Bangalore along with her parents when she was eleven months old.

She went to Sophia High School in Bangalore and did her pre-university studies from Mount Carmel College, Bangalore. Inspite of being a state level badminton player during her school years, she did not want to pursue a career in the sport.

Later she enrolled herself in Indira Gandhi National Open University for Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. She pursued a career in modeling while in college and modeled for Indian brand names such as Liril, close-up toothpaste, Limca etc.

The cosmetics company Maybelline made her its international spokesperson. Awarded the title ‘Model of the Year’ at the Kingfisher Fashion Awards, she was shortly chosen as one of the models of the Kingfisher Swimsuit Calendar (2006).

Later Kingfisher Airlines, Levi Strauss and Tissot SA were added to her long list of endorsements. She made her debut as an actress with the Kannada movie ‘Aishwarya’ in 2006 and then made her bollywood debut with Farah Khan’s ‘Om Shanti Om’ in 2007 which was a blockbuster.

Her first film in hindi cinema got her recognized by the critics as well as the audience and she won the Filmfare Best Actress Debut award and a nomination in the Filmfare Best Actress category. Her next release was ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’ in 2008 which did moderately at the box office.

Then in 2009, she did a double role in ‘Chandi Chowk to China’ opposite Akshay Kumar ehich turned out poorly. Critically and commercially, the film flopped without gaining any positive reviews for Deepika’s performance.

Her romance with actor Ranbir Kapoor also started in this year and they seen as the new hot couple of Bollywood. She did ‘Love Aaj kal’ opposite Saif Ali Khan in 2009 which was one of the biggest hits of the year and earned her a nomination in the Filmfare Best Actress category but failed to leave a mark in the minds of the critics. But her break up with the ‘Saawariya’ actor was the hot topic of the news that year.

In 2010 her first film was ‘Karthik Calling Karthik’ which was a commercial failure. She next appeared in the multi-starrer ‘Housefull’ which was a big hit in India grossing over INR 95 crore in the first week. She next did ‘Lafange Parindey’ and made the audience cry and sympathize with her character. Her next release in 2010 was ‘Break Ke Baad’ which was a commercial failure but won her acclamations from critics.

Her final release of the year was ‘Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey’ was another flop. She also walked the red carpet at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival. 2011 started for her with a sizzling item number in ‘Dum Maaro Dum’ which received mixed reviews. She was next seen in ‘Aarakshan’ portrayed her great acting skills. She next appeared in ‘Desi Boyzz’ which was average at the box office.

In 2012 she appeared in ‘Cocktail’ in a totally different version of her. She played the role of a vivacious, bold and a naughty girl who solely handled the movie with her character. As a part of NDTV’s Greenathon Campaign, she adopted the village Ambegaon in Maharashtra. She also dated Vijay Mallya’s son Siddharth Mallya but broke up with him in 2012.
