Profile:Dipika Padukone

Smart Actress Deepika PadukDeepika Padukone has been voted as the sexiest of her species by a particular magazine and at the same time she is defined as plastic by many. She has been nominated in every single award function organised this year and yet her acting credentials are not acclaimed by everyone. All this is sufficient to state at least one age old and clichéd statement – Love her or hate her, but you can’t ignore her. Well, if nothing else, Deepika Padukone seems to be on the cover page of every magazine which keeps her noticed.

Model Deepika Padukone, who turned actress with Shah Rukh Khan starrer ‘Om Shanti Om’ started hitting the headlines long before the release of her first film. And by the release of her second film ‘Bachna Ae Haseeno’ Deepika had plenty more reasons to be in news, the most prominent one being her relationship with Kapoor scion Ranbir Kapoor. This is, however, certainly not the first time Deepika has been involved with a guy. Before Deepika Padukone hit the screens she had romantic liaisons with people like businessman Nihar Pandya and another newcomer model turned actor Muzammil Ibrahim – that was of course during her modelling days in Delhi and ended with Deepika moving to Mumbai for acting ambitions.

For those who didn’t notice, ‘Om Shanti Om’ was not really Deepika’s first assignment on screen. Apart from numerous ads, it was one of Himesh Reshammiya’s music video ‘Naam Hai Tera’ from his hugely successful album ‘Aap Ka Suroor’, where she dumbstruck the audience with her beauty. And after that there was also the Kannada film ‘Aishwarya’, which also starred Amitabh Bachchan. Deepika Padukone interestingly was paid Rs 20 lakhs for that movie, a record in itself for a Kannada newcomer. A subtle signal of superstardom right at the beginning of her career!

Deepika Padukone’s Kannada connection is something she got right with her birth. Deepika Padukone, the star, was born in Denmark to badminton great Prakash Padukone and wife Ujjala on 5 January 1986. Deepika grew up in a traditional Manglorean set up and was educated in a convent. As Deepika Padukone grew up she strolled into her father path as a national level badminton player. At the same time her mother’s influence got her into Bharatnatyam. But destiny had something else in mind. During a casual outing, Deepika’s tall, slender figure caught the eyes of a photographer, who persuaded her for a photo shoot and then there was no looking back for the Padukone girl.

Deepika Padukone bounced off to modelling mid-way from becoming another badminton great. As if it might have been destined, Deepika became a supermodel instead and big banners came running to her, like peas to a pod. Within a few years, Deepika was the face of Liril, Dabur, Close-Up and Limca. Prestigious modelling offers poured in and Deepika Padukone became the brand ambassador of the Jewels of India, an annual jewellery exhibition. Deepika hit the international circuit when Maybelline made her its international cover girl. When luck came dancing her way at an astonishing pace, recognition had to follow suit. At the fifth annual Kingfisher Awards, Deepika Padukone was awarded the title of Model of the Year and Playboy Magazine Cover Winner.

The Kingfisher Swimsuit Calendar, a prestigious platform in the world of modelling, selected her as one of their models for the 2006 edition. This was not the end. Two more awards followed later that year including the Idea Zee Fashion Awards – Female Model of the Year and Fresh Face of the Year. And just recently Deepika was signed for Fiama di Wills. And of course, life as a model didn’t continue too long. As Deepika Padukone looked at newer peaks Farah Khan cast her opposite SRK in ‘Om Shanti Om’. The rest, as they say, is history.

Deepika Padukone instantly shone to glory post the release of the film. There were lakhs of fans overnight. A simple measure of this would be the constantly increasing number of fan websites and also the number of members in communities on social networking sites, leave alone crazy impersonators. And not to forget the Indian cricket team, especially Yuvraj Singh and Mahendra Singh Dhoni who seemed to have been struck by the beauty.

Deepika Padukone today is considered as someone who could fill up the void of young female superstars. Aishwarya Rai is no more that young and Madhuri Dixit and Kajol faded into oblivion long back. No wonder then Deepika is the choice of every director right from Priyadarshan to Siddharth Anand to Nikhil Advani. While Deepika Padukone has won all the debutant awards this year, her big prize would certainly be the fact that she and her father are back to be great pals now… after rumours that her getting into modelling had not gone down too well with him. They even had a friendly badminton match recently which was watched by all the media eyes. Life sure looks heavenly for this 22 year old. ‘Aaj Deepika ke paas sab kuch hai… romance, awards, assignments aur Papa bhi!’
